The Building’s History
Johann Georg Moeller – Builder, original owner
Born on December 7, 1818 in Michaelsrombach in the Germanic state of
Hess, Moeller emigrated on the Ship Weser and arrived on the Texas coast
in July of 1844 at the age of 25. He married widow Katherine (Catarina)
Ebert Hoffman in 1848, who had lost her husband on the voyage to New
Braunfels and had two young children.
Moeller began construction on the house in 1859. Working alone, Moeller
hand-cut the limestone blocks hauled from a quarry close to the present-day
Rock Street. The home features fachwerk, 18-foot cedar beams, rafters
and cypress floor boards of random sizes.
Moeller and his family moved into the house three weeks before he died
in 1867 at the age of 49.
Katherine continued to live in the home until her death in 1881 at which
time the property was sold to John Mueller.
The building has been used for a variety of different purposes over
the years including the Bavarian Village Restaurant and Gift Shop prior
to being transformed into the Christmas Shoppe.
